After the game‘s launch in late May this year, Ubisoft announced to sunset their free-to-play first person shooter XDefiant. As of December 3rd, player won’t be able to further download, purchases or register for the shooter. XDefiant will be playable until its shutdown date on June 3rd, 2025.

Following this decision, Ubisoft will close their Osaka and San Francisco production studios and ramp down their Sydney production site. This leads to 143 people being let go in San Francisco and 134 people likely fired in Osaka and Sydney. In a nutshell, 277 people will lose their jobs.

XDefiant arrived on the scene as a competitor to Call of Duty and positioned itself as a free-to-play alternative with more focus on character kits and team play. A big difference between the two games was that XDefiant didn’t use skill-based-match making. This feature allows matches to consist of players with nearly equal skills.
